PSHE - Monday

PSHE Session 2 - Understanding and Developing Empathy (Family session)

Task 1

Help children understand empathy

Empathy is our ability to understand and share someone else’s feelings.  This Sesame Street video is a great place to start.  Click here

What words would you use to explain what empathy means?

What ways could everyone in your family show more empathy to each other?

Task 2

Explore other lives

When we look and listen carefully, we learn so much about other people.  Use this Family Activity to explore using art to talk about feelings.

Task 3

Use books to help children develop empathy (a learnable skill)

Sharing stories is a great way of connecting and feeling close to others. Share the book, "Last Stop on Market Street".  This award-winning book follows a boy and his grandmother as they witness beauty, kindness and joy on the bus.  Click here

Once the story has finished, talk about how you felt about the story.

Why did Nana and CJ take the bus to its last stop on Market Street every Sunday after church?

If you close your eyes and listen to this part of the text again, can you see what CJ saw when the man with the guitar played on the bus?

What did you like about the story?

Was there anything you disliked?

Who did you have empathy with?  Whose feelings could you relate to?

Did the characters show empathy for each other?

How do you think the character felt when…?

Task 4

How can we put empathy into action?

What are you going to do to make sure you act with more empathy and make the world a better place?

Will you listen harder and not interrupt?

Will you ask friends and family how they are feeling and listen to them when they tell you?

Will you make an effort to find out what your neighbours need?  (Always work with your adult)

Will you help our local Food Banks?

Design a poster with your resolution on it. Decorate it in any way you like and put your poster up so others can see it.
